This Monday’s Google Doodle (2) pays tribute to the Appalachian Trail. For 55 years, the route, which extends approximately 3,500 kilometers and passes through 14 of the 50 federal units of the United States, has been a National Scenic Byway. To celebrate this history, Google is displaying, on its home page, an interactive virtual brochure for anyone interested in learning more about the topic.
The trail appears
The idea of creating what is now known as the Appalachian Trail as a nature hiking trail was first proposed in 1921 by the American forester, planner, and conservationist Benton McKay.

The issue soon caught the attention of others, and thus, the Appalachian Trail Conference was formed. Although the path has more prominence in the United States, the Google Home page is also displayed in countries such as Brazil, Peru, Canada, France, and the United Kingdom.
