Largest offshore wind farm starts generating electricity in UK

The first phase of the Dogger Bank Wind Farm, the world’s largest offshore wind farm, is in operation and delivering electricity to the UK grid. Electr. Located 130 km off the Yorkshire coast, the farm is being developed in three phases, with a total capacity of 3.6 GW.

The first offshore wind turbine in A generates power that is sent to the country’s national grid through an HVDC transmission system built by Hitachi Energy. This is the first time that HVDC technology has been used on a wind farm in the UK.

In addition, Dogger Bank is also the site of GE Renewable Energy’s first Haliade-X wind turbine installation.

  • Each of these wind turbines is 260 meters tall, equivalent to the height of Rockefeller Center in New York;
  • Each wind turbine’s blades are 107 meters long and each of their turns is capable of producing enough energy to power an average household in the United Kingdom for two days;
  • Once completed, the Dogger Bank wind farm will feature 277 offshore wind turbines, capable of producing enough clean energy to power six million homes annually;
  • Furthermore, the wind farm is expected to contribute to an annual CO₂ reduction equivalent to taking 1.5 million cars off the streets.

Responsibility for the development and construction of Togar Bank lies with Equinor from Norway and Vårgrønn, a joint venture between British SSE Renewables and Eni Plenitude and Hitec Vision. By implementing these innovations in the renewable energy sector, the UK seeks to reduce its dependence on non-renewable sources and contribute to the fight against climate change.
