British Prime Minister Liz Truss again defended her fiscal plans on Wednesday, saying the country’s growth was not strong enough and that the tax cuts she had proposed would help Britons weather the global economic crisis.

Speaking at a British Conservative Party event in Birmingham, England, Truss said her priorities were “grow, grow, grow”. “I will not allow the anti-growth coalition to hold us back,” he added, referring to critics of his fiscal policy.

Last week, the British pound hit an all-time low against the dollar, and interest on Britain’s 10-year government bond (Gilt) jumped to its highest level since 2008 in response to Lees’ plans, announced on September 23.

Truss reiterated Wednesday that he would reduce the tax burden, defending the tax cuts as “correct” from an ethical and economic point of view. “In these difficult times, we need to do more,” he said.

The prime minister, who was briefly boycotted by Greenpeace activists, said her government would “fulfill the promise of Brexit”, as the UK’s process of leaving the European Union is known. He promised that “by the end of the year, the EU bureaucracy will be reduced to a past.”
