The British government has announced legislation to stop illegal immigrants entering the UK. Known as the “stopping of the boats,” the move violates international law and is contested by the opposition and human rights groups.

The United Kingdom’s Home Secretary, Portugal’s counterpart to Foreign Minister Suella Braverman, presented the “Illegal Immigration Bill” to Parliament this Tuesday. The law, popularly known as “Stop the Boats – Stop the Boats”, aims to prevent ships carrying illegal immigrants arriving on British shores, particularly through the English Channel, through which 45,000 people entered the UK by 2022.

“This has to stop. By bringing in new legislation I am making it clear that the only route to the UK is safe and legal. They cannot claim asylum or build a life if they come here illegally”, argued Suella Braverman. “This will end the incentive for people to risk their lives on these dangerous and unnecessary journeys, and once and for all pull the rug out from under the criminal gangs who profit from this misery”, the British government argues.
