Brazil remains the second country in which more plastic surgeries are performed in the world, with about 1.4 million procedures per year, according to data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Among the most requested cosmetic procedures, rhinoplasty is the second process among the desires of Brazilians who seek to have a more symmetrical and attractive face.
However, this surgery, in addition to providing beauty and increasing self-esteem, can also improve the health of the individual, especially the respiratory system, since there is a possibility to correct a deviated nasal septum and treat nasal corneas – a valid alternative to these. Those with allergic rhinitis or sinusitis.
“We call this procedure septoplasty, and it’s when the individual takes advantage of the moment of the operation to adjust the nose as well,” explains the otolaryngologist. Edson FreitasRhinoplasty specialist. “When septal deviation surgery is performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty, the results tend to be more satisfactory both functionally and aesthetically, because correction of the septum will also affect the overall appearance of the nose,” he adds.
The nasal septum, made up of bone, cartilage and mucous membrane, is essentially the nasal structure that separates the two nostrils, and deviation occurs when this structure is not straight, resulting in nasal cavities of various sizes. According to Dr. Edson Freitas, when mild does not cause any discomfort, but in severe cases, an operation is recommended.
He notes that “in severe cases, this problem can be facilitated by secretion retention, bleeding, breathing through the mouth, fatigue, headache, and sleep apnea, among other associated symptoms that are detrimental to the individual’s well-being.”
Another case in which rhinoplasty is recommended to aid health is the case of turbinectomy. “This is a functional surgical procedure aimed at reducing the size of the nasal cavity or the corneas within the mucous-covered nostril cavity. Its function is to heat, humidify and filter the air you breathe.”
Not all septal deviations require surgery. Recommendations are made only when the condition causes problems for the patient, such as difficulty breathing.
The otolaryngologist notes that a medical evaluation is necessary to make a decision about whether or not to undergo rhinoplasty. Through a complete evaluation that includes a physical examination, as well as computed tomography and nasal laryngoscopy.
