Back at Vista do Pontal, this time as Prime Minister, Luis Montenegro used the speech to lift the veil on the country’s new measures.

First, in the field of health, Montenegro acknowledged that “there is a lot to be done”. “We have to qualify our workers and public administration employees, value their professional life, give a perspective that public service can be provided in the social sector, even in the private sector, but the essence of public health service lies in the national health service”, he declared.

In the case of doctors, “you need the courage to confront the excessive union vision that has not contributed to the survival of doctors in the SNS.” He promised: “We will train more doctors, create more medical schools in hospitals, and we will receive them and spread them throughout the territory.”

The chief executive also announced the creation of more places for medical courses, to compensate for doctors retiring from the NHS.

The prime minister also said a plan called “Green Mobility” would be presented in September, which aims to “really make citizens’ lives easier” in terms of transport.

“One of the cornerstones of this green mobility is the railway. I announce that we will decide to create a railway pass of 20 euros per month that will give access to all urban, regional and intercity trains.

“Whoever lives in Braga and wants to go to Porto or Aveiro, whoever lives in Aveiro and wants to go to Leiria and Lisbon, whoever lives in Lisbon and wants to go to Lisbon or Faro will have the opportunity to do so for 20 euros per month,” he added.
