DeepMind, the artificial intelligence division of Google, on Tuesday (29) introduced a beta version of SynthID, a tool that uses watermarks to identify images generated by artificial intelligence.

Identification is imperceptible to the naked eye, as the technology embeds the brand directly into the pixels of the image. Thus, it can only be detected with some modifications to the image, such as adding filters, changing colors, and other modifications.

This tool is the result of a measure set by the US government, which in July required major technology companies to submit a seal identifying AI-generated images. In addition to Google, OpenAI, Meta, Amazon, Anthropic, and Inflection have also committed to using the watermark.

What makes the Google tag different from others is that it can’t just be cut off from the edges of the image, where these tags are usually placed.

While generative AI can unlock enormous creative potential, it also introduces new risks, such as allowing creators to spread false information – intentionally or unintentionally. The ability to identify content generated by AI is critical to enabling people to know when they are interacting with generated media and to help prevent the spread of misinformation.

Initially, the technology will be available to Google Cloud customers using the Vertex AI and Imagen platforms. In the future, it will be made available to third parties.
