Union calls for transparency after Black female passenger alleges discriminatory treatment on airport transport service

A leading UK trade union has called for a full and transparent investigation after a Black female passenger was refused boarding on an airport coach service at London Stansted Airport, prompting concerns about passenger treatment and potential discrimination.

GMB, one of the recognised trade unions operating at Stansted Airport, has urged both coach operator Flibco and airport management to conduct a thorough review of the incident, which occurred during the early hours of 3 July and has since attracted significant attention on social media.

The case centres on allegations made by a female passenger who says she was denied boarding despite holding a valid ticket for a Flibco airport coach departing from Stansted Airport at approximately 3.30am.

Incident Gains Widespread Attention Online

According to the passenger’s account, which has been viewed tens of thousands of times online, she was first in the boarding queue and presented a valid barcode ticket before being refused entry to the coach.

The passenger alleges that the driver told her he had “a feeling”, was “uncomfortable” and believed she had “an attitude”, despite her insistence that she had done nothing wrong. She further claims that fellow passengers supported her version of events and that police attended the scene.

Despite police involvement, the passenger says the driver maintained his decision not to allow her onto the coach, leaving her to wait for a later service.

The woman has publicly described her treatment as racism and misogynoir, a term used to describe discrimination directed specifically at Black women.

Flibco has acknowledged the incident and stated publicly that it is reviewing CCTV footage and conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the refusal of boarding.

Union Raises Concerns for Airport Workers and Passengers

GMB said the incident is of particular concern because many of its members rely on airport coach services such as Flibco to travel to and from work, often during overnight and early-morning hours.

The union noted that a significant proportion of those workers come from Black and ethnically diverse communities and regularly use the transport network serving Stansted Airport.

As a result, the union argues that the treatment of passengers on such services directly affects the workforce it represents.

GMB has called for an investigation that is not only comprehensive but also transparent and completed without unnecessary delay.

The union is also seeking assurances that all relevant evidence, including CCTV recordings, is preserved and reviewed as part of the process.

Calls for Accountability and Preventive Measures

Ken Breach, GMB Senior Organiser, said:

“No one should be turned away from a coach they have paid for and left stranded at an airport at three in the morning. A valid ticket is a valid ticket. The account the passenger has shared is deeply distressing and it demands answers, not a holding line days after the event.

“Stansted is one of the busiest airports in the country and every passenger using it deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. GMB wants a full and transparent investigation. We want all CCTV preserved and reviewed. And we want Flibco and the airport to say clearly what they will do to make sure this never happens again.

“Discrimination has no place at Stansted or on any service operating from it.”

The union has formally written to the Managing Director of London Stansted Airport requesting a full investigation into the matter.

In its correspondence, GMB has also asked the airport, as the site operator, to use its position to ensure that the review process is conducted thoroughly and independently.

Pressure Mounts for Findings

The incident comes at a time when transport operators and public service providers across the UK face increasing scrutiny over equality, diversity and passenger treatment standards.

While Flibco’s investigation remains ongoing, calls are growing for clarity regarding the circumstances that led to the boarding refusal and whether existing procedures were followed appropriately.

GMB has confirmed that it has offered direct support to the passenger involved while awaiting the outcome of the investigation.

For now, both passengers and airport workers are looking for answers as stakeholders seek to determine exactly what occurred and what measures may be needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Investigation Underway as Stakeholders Seek Answers

With CCTV footage under review and public attention continuing to build, the outcome of the investigation is likely to be closely watched by passengers, airport staff, community groups and transport operators alike.

The case has raised broader questions about accountability, passenger rights and confidence in transport services operating at one of the United Kingdom’s busiest airports.
