In 2017, when Alex was 11, he went on holiday with his mother Melanie Patty – who does not have parental custody of her son – and his grandfather David Patty. The boy never returned to the home of his grandmother and legal guardian, Susan Caruana, and was abducted by his mother, who lived in several countries. However, the boy was reported missing in England.
Alex’s paternal mother and grandfather followed a lifestyle that involved traveling between countries in groups of ten, which meant the youngster was never enrolled in school.
Alex decides to run away from his mother and grandfather after finding out they are going to Finland. For the past two years, Alex has lived in France. Last week, the now 17-year-old was found hitchhiking near Toulouse after four days hiking in the Pyrenees.
At the weekend, the young man returned home and met up with his family in England – including his grandmother. According to British newspapers, Alex said he was “delighted to be home for Christmas”.
On Saturday, Deputy Chief Constable Matt Boyle of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that Alex had returned to the UK.
