The suspect, Jian Guo, is accused of sharing information about working in the European Parliament with Chinese intelligence services and spying on Chinese opposition figures in Germany, according to a statement issued by the Federal Prosecutor's Office.
On the European Parliament's website, Jian Guo appears as a certified assistant to MEP Maximilian Krah, the leading candidate of the far-right Alternative for Germany party in the upcoming European elections.
He is a German citizen and has been working as an assistant in Brussels since 2019. The prosecutor's office said the suspect is an “agent of the Chinese intelligence service.”
The MP adds: “In January 2024, the accused repeatedly transferred information about negotiations and decisions in the European Parliament to his intelligence agent. He also spied on members of the Chinese opposition in Germany for the intelligence service.”
Jianguo was arrested in Dresden, Germany, on Monday and his home was searched. The suspect lives in both Dresden and Brussels, according to ARD, RBB and SWR, which reported the arrest.
According to the Alternative for Germany party, these allegations are “extremely disturbing.” “Without more information about the case, we must wait for the investigations conducted by federal prosecutors,” party spokesman Michael Pfalzgraf said in a statement.
