According to an official statement, the alleged plan called for anti-government demonstrations in Tbilisi “in October and December,” when the next assessments of Georgia’s progress in the EU accession process should be published.
The government in Tbilisi is accused of cooperating with the Kremlin, despite the deployment of Russian forces in the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia since Moscow’s 2008 invasion.
In July, Kiev summoned the Georgian ambassador, accusing Tbilisi of torturing Mikheil Saakashvili, also a Ukrainian citizen and adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in prison.
In June 2022, the European Union rejected candidate status for Georgia, granting it to Ukraine and Moldova.
Brussels demands Tbilisi reforms in the judicial and electoral system, as well as guarantees on freedom of the press and “measures to combat the oligarchs.”
