cCaring for plants, gardening or having a vegetable garden are activities that can have health benefits. The conclusion is from a study published in The Lancet Planetary Health. People who exercise end up consuming more fiber and moving more, for example.

The investigation was conducted in 37 community gardens in Denver and Aurora, in the United States, and involved 291 participants. Then all of them were analyzed in terms of weight, physical activity and diet.

The study showed that people who worked in these gardens ended up consuming more fruits and vegetables each day. They ate an extra 1.4 grams of fiber per day, increasing this value by 7% at the end of the investigation.

They also became more active people, and had less anxiety and stress compared to groups of people who didn’t do the same activity.

“These findings provide concrete evidence that community gardening can play an important role in preventing cancer, chronic disease, and mental health disorders,” said Jill Lett, one of the study’s authors.
