The football associations of the countries that make up the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), as well as Ireland, ruled out their candidacy to host the 2030 World Cup on Monday, as the entities issued a joint official statement indicating that they will officially enter the race to host the 2028 edition of the European Championship, which local leaders have already expected in recent weeks.

“Hosting a European Championship provides a similar return (to the World Cup) on investments. The European Championship results in a much lower cost and the potential for benefits to be realised sooner,” the official memo reads.

The signatory federations said they had conducted an “extensive feasibility study” into the possibilities of hosting a major international tournament, and therefore decided to choose the European Cup, “the third largest sporting event in the world”.

The analysis, according to the official statement, included “the economic impact of the tournament, the political landscape of football and the potential costs” of hosting a major international tournament. Regarding Euro 2028, the statement said: “It will be a great opportunity to demonstrate the real impact of hosting a world-class tournament, to make a positive difference and to leave a lasting legacy.”

The two federations said they would continue to work with the UK and Ireland governments to prepare the next steps in the bid to host the continental tournament. The deadline for registration for the 2030 World Cup is set to close next month, with the venue to be announced in September this year.

So far, the interests expressed by Spain and Portugal, which will jointly organize the tournament, have remained, as well as Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay – the South American country that hosted the first edition of the World Cup in 1930.
