This week the State Center for Health Surveillance (Cevs) issued a risk statement due to the increase in the number of dengue cases registered in Rio Grande do Sul. In one year, notifications increased by about 5.5 times; confirmed cases 6.3 times; and deaths 6 times.
Last year there were 16,590 notifications. This year there were more than 90,000. About confirmed cases in the state, in 2021 there were 10 thousand 591. This year there were already 66 thousand 741. In terms of deaths from the disease, this year there were 66 deaths in Rio Grande do Sul, and in 2021 there were 11 deaths . An increase of 73,415 notifications was recorded from 2021 to 2022. In one year, there were another 56,150 confirmed cases. As for deaths, the number of infections has increased this year by 55 compared to last year.
Also according to the State Center for Health Surveillance, this year all of Brazil has seen an increase in the number of cases. Today, according to CEVS, 91% of municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul are infested with mosquitoes. Aedes aegypti Vector of dengue and other diseases such as chikungunya, zika, and urban yellow fever

In Ijuí, according to Health Surveillance Coordinator Ortiz Júnior, the increase in positives compared to last year is also significant. This year there were 157 confirmed cases, while in 2021 there were only 29, i.e. in 2022 the increase was already 441.38%.

However, with regard to confirmed cases, Ortiz explains that some cases have received confirmation due to clinical improvement, that is, if other members of the same family of someone who has already tested positive show the same symptoms, they will also be notified as positive.

Regarding the number of suspected cases, Ortiz points out that in Ijuí this problem is dealt with occasionally: “We have a very good relationship with the municipality’s primary care network, that is, when any patient searches for an appointment in the network, he will already be notified that he is suspicious. After the necessary materials are collected, the environmental monitoring team analyzes them and determines which cases deserve more attention. Our agents immediately go to these sites and note a series of factors to then decide whether pesticides need to be used,” Ortiz says.
