China has recalled six British diplomats, including the consul general, two months after an attack on a Hong Kong democracy supporter was dragged into the Chinese embassy in Manchester.
All six diplomats left England without being questioned by British authorities about what happened at the Manchester consulate on October 16.
The United Kingdom earlier this week demanded that Chinese diplomats waive diplomatic immunity after making it clear to the Chinese embassy in London that they would face consequences if they did not cooperate with the investigation.
Eventually, all six were declared persona non grata and could be expelled from the UK as a result.
Consul General Zheng Xiyuan, even after being identified in the photos, denied attacking the protester, later saying he was trying to protect his colleagues and even considered it “his duty” to do so.
At the Chinese consulate in Manchester, Hong Kong democracy supporter Bob Chan was attacked by several men after being dragged into the compound for protesting outside.
