The new influenza vaccine will be trivalent, consisting of the H1N1 virus, the H3N2 Darwin subtype, and the B strain. According to the institute, the immunizing agent will be important to fight H3N2 influenza outbreak that infects Brazil and contains the spread of the virus.

Butantan already produces 80 million doses of influenza vaccine that are used in the national vaccination campaign. In this new version of the vaccine, the H1N1 It is the only strain still present in the material. Butantan produces the influenza immunizing agent in its own factory, which separately produces the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (IFA) for the three strains, which are subsequently mixed in another packaging plant. Virus types are imported from Europe.

We already produced 100% of the IFA of H1N1 in September. We are in the process of finalizing IFA for strain B and in January we started producing IFA for H3N2. In the first half of February, it is scheduled to start formulations and packaging,” told the Director of Production at the Butantan Institute, Ricardo Oliveira.
