Essay writing can be challenging enough when you’re writing on a topic you love, but it gets even harder when you have to write an essay about something you’re not passionate about. There are certain tips and tricks to help you make this process easier. If you’re tasked with writing an essay on business or entrepreneurship, here are some ways to make the process go smoothly.

Step 1: Understand your topic

It’s important to understand the topic before you start writing. Make sure you know what you’re being asked, who you need to address in your essay, and what argument or thesis statement (if any) will be acceptable. A common problem with business essays is covering too much in one text—make sure that what you write about directly relates to your topic statement.

Step 2: Choose your angle

Before you start writing your business essay, either as an essay writer or not, it’s helpful to know how it should look. Business schools are looking for different qualities in applicants, and you can tailor yours accordingly. For example, are you a person who likes to crunch spreadsheets? Or do you care more about having strong leadership skills? Ensure that what your essay communicates is what really matters most for you. For example, if someone writes an essay called 5 Reasons You Should Hire Me, it is better to name it 5 Ways I’ve Improved My Company to demonstrate the ability to take the initiative and responsibility. List things that might make your qualities look appealing on paper.

Step 3: Do your research

The most important step in writing a business essay is doing research. It doesn’t matter how persuasive you are; if you’re working with false information, your argument will be faulty. Researching can take time and effort, but it’s absolutely essential. A good place to start is by talking with someone who works in that industry or area of business. If they have any insights to share, make sure you take detailed notes so you can include them in your essay, or better still, go on grademiners.com to get essay samples. Don’t worry about sourcing everything right away; a note-taking session doesn’t need footnotes. Instead, you’ll do editing later and then turn sources into citations.

Step 4: Outline your essay

Before you begin writing, outline your essay. Write down three to five key points you want to highlight in your essay. Remember: a great essay requires a well-developed thesis, but it doesn’t always require lots of detail—just make sure that each of your supporting points is relevant and connected to the main ideas. This strategy also helps prevent writer’s block later on if you don’t know where to start while writing.

Step 5: Get started writing

This is where you start writing your first draft. Don’t worry about grammar or formatting—you can come back and clean it up when you’re finished with a first draft. If you get stuck and aren’t sure what else to say, repeat some of your strongest sentences from the brainstorming process. That’s one way to ensure that you have enough content for an entire post. Again, try not to overthink it; just do your best to write something coherent that contains all of your chosen keywords. The more interesting content you have, especially around those keywords, the more people will want to read it.

Step 6: Revise, revise, and revise!

Once you’ve written your post, print it out and read it again for a few hours, then a few days. A week later, send yourself an email with your post attached and ask: what do I like about my writing? What could be better? Revise until you love it! Don’t just rely on your own opinion—get other people’s input. Show your draft to at least three friends or colleagues and ask them what they think. Take notes and revise again before publishing.

Step 7: Proofread it once more

Once you have finally completed your professional business essay, read through it one last time. You may find a few typos or grammatical errors. Rewrite any sentences that don’t flow correctly. Save a copy of your essay if you need it again later.
