His last match was against Roman Reigns in Smackdown On that day, for the Universal Championship, which if he lost, he would have to leave WWE.
In September of that year, he debuted with AEWIn the Everyone is outside.
Speaking on My Mom’s Basement with Robbie Fox, American Dragon considered leaving WWE and wasn’t sure if he wanted to join AEW, and how Roman Reigns was the right opponent to bid him farewell.
The only experience in WrestleMania (37) was like, “Wow, that looks empty.”. Ironically, my last WWE match with Roman Reigns, I was excited.
I loved it, and it was in the Thunderdome. There was a lot of screaming and artificial noise and things like that, and I was: “That’s great! I love it!”And honestly I thought it was the perfect way out.
Because I wasn’t sure if I would sign with AEW. I was debating back and forth, but I was also just arguing – I don’t mean to stick, but just stop doing it full time and focus more on being a dad.
