BMW i3 batteries power Coldplay parties

BMW i3 batteries power Coldplay parties

Coldplay said goodbye to Coimbra two days ago and is now ready to give music to the Spaniards in Barcelona. Powering the entire fireworks show that they put on for the public are recycled batteries…provided by BMW!

In 2013, BMW launched its first zero-emissions production car. After many kilometers, the German manufacturer decided to end production of the i3 in the summer of last year.

Despite getting out of the way, BMW hasn't dumped its batteries and other components. The first, for example, is being used, albeit for a very different purpose than (maybe) expected.

a BMW has teamed up with Coldplay and his "Music of Spheres" tour, which in Portugal alone sold out four concerts and took over 200,000 people to Coimbra.

We are proud to have partnered with BMW to create the first ever portable and rechargeable battery live concert. This innovation will allow us to provide our parties with clean and renewable energy.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin explained.

For four days, Coldplay gave life to the biggest show the student city has ever hosted, and saw their concerts powered by more than 40 recycled BMW i3 batteries, with no additional processing.

The energy is used to power audio, video, special effects, technical support, and lighting at appointments in Portugal and Spain.

Well, just like here, at Coldplay's concerts in Barcelona - with today's first event - 100% of the energy needed will be supplied from sustainable sources.

After all, the BMW i3's more than 40 recycled batteries, with a maximum capacity of 1,680 kWh, will be recharged between concerts using renewable energy from photovoltaic solar panels, biofuel generators and crowd-generated power.

As happened in Portugal, the floor of the Lluís Company Olympic Stadium in Barcelona is set to take advantage of the movement of thousands of fans, and electric bikes are ready to pedal.
