The first lady flew to San Antonio on Monday to speak at the annual conference of UnidosUS, a Latino civil rights and defense group formerly known as Conselho Nacional de La Rasa.
Before returning to Washington, Jill Biden also spoke during a Democratic Party fundraiser.
The attempt at praise failed when the first lady said the Latin variety was “distinguished as bodegas in the Bronx, with the beauty of flowers in Miami and as unique as breakfast tacos in San Antonio.”
Jill Biden also misspelled “bodegas,” which are small, urban convenience stores that usually specialize in Hispanic foods.
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists and other organizations responded via social media against the “abuse”.
“The use of breakfast tacos in an attempt to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio demonstrates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region,” the Journalists’ Organization noted.
This association also said that the first lady and speechwriters should “dedicate more time in the future to better understand the complexities of people and society.” [latina]”.
Hispanic voters prefer Democrats, although patterns of support for the group vary widely in different parts of the United States.
Latino support for the Democratic presidential candidate in 2020 (Joe Biden) is lower than in 2016 (Hillary Clinton), according to Pew Research Center data.
Some Democrats pointed out that the party was not working hard enough to maintain Hispanic support.
During her speech, Jill Biden discussed how President Joe Biden has responded to the community, including appointing Latinos to Cabinet and other senior government positions and helping them get vaccinated against Covid-19.
