The Brazilian government has banned Apple from continuing to sell iPhones without a charger as of Tuesday and has fined the US company 12.2 million reais (about 2.3 million euros) for damages to consumers.
The decision, made by the Department of Defense and Consumer Protection, means the license to sell for all iPhone 12 and 13 models that do not contain the charger is revoked.
The fine imposed on Apple will be increased daily in the event of non-compliance with the order, according to the text published by the Consumer Protection Authority in the country’s Official Gazette.
To justify its decision, the authority considered that Apple violated the rights of consumers by selling the incomplete product, considering that the charger is necessary for the proper functioning of the device.
Brazil’s Ministry of Consumer Defense also said there was “no effective evidence of environmental protection” with the shipper not listed, an argument used by the North American company.
The entity highlighted Apple as a “repeated violator” for not stopping its practice of selling cell phones without a charger, despite receiving numerous fines from Brazilian regional consumer protection agencies.
