WAround 50 dead animals were left outside a shop in Broughton, England, overnight from Thursday to Friday.
The discovery was made by volunteers from Broughton Community Shop at 6am on Friday, who found 50 rabbits, a barn owl and a lifeless barn kestrel.
“It's safe to say none of us expected the day to start as it did at Broughton Community Shop this morning. Thanks to everyone who came, texted and called to make sure we were okay. Our health. Shocked, but okay,” lamented the shop on the social network Facebook.
The agency appealed to those with video surveillance cameras in the area to check if they captured any suspicious movements, especially between 3:00 a.m. and 3:35 a.m.
Treasurer Mike Hensman admitted the discovery was “devastating” for staff. Two birds “were impaled on the shop's doorknobs,” one of them told BBC News.
Authorities have removed the bodies and are trying to trace the owners of the silver Suzuki Grand Vitara.
