The fuselo, a migratory bird that can be found along the Portuguese coast, especially on Ria Formosa, has become the world record holder: it flew more than 13,500 km in 11 days, without stopping on the way, the fastest flight along a bird ever recorded .

The five-month-old bird left Alaska, USA, on October 13, and landed in Tasmania, Australia, on the 24th of the same month.

Scientists say that the fuselage, to which they assigned the number “234684”, add that the minimum distance traveled in those eleven days, without the bird stopping the flight, was 13555 kilometers and 825 meters. It was one of several birds that researchers from the Pukorokoro Miranda Bird Watching Center have installed a 5G satellite tracking device with the aim of tracking and understanding migration patterns.

“You wouldn’t be the first to make this flight, fuselos love to visit Tasmania in the summer and we know it was with a group, but it’s the first time a marked bird has flown between Alaska and Tasmania,” Ornithological officials said on social media.

Now, a detective will go to the site to try and find the record-breaking bird.

The ‘record holder’ fuselage reached its previous maximum of 13,050 km, which was hit by another bird of the same type, known as ‘4BBRW’, in 2021.
