Urinary tract infections (often recurrent), urinary tract stones, malignant and benign urinary tract tumors (including kidney, bladder, ureter and urethra), overactive bladder, urethral diverticulum and vesico-vaginal fistula are some of the most common problems treated in Urology clinic. , in women, especially those 50 years of age or older, who are seeking to investigate symptoms common to many diseases. This statement was made by the President of the Brazilian Urological Society, Department of Amazonas (SBU-AM), urologist Giuseppe Vigliolo.

For most of the population, a urologist is to men what gynecologists are to women, when it comes to medical examination and screening for potential changes in health, Vigliolo, a public health physician and co-owner of Urocentro Manaus explains.

“It is true that a urologist is one of the main professionals involved when it comes to men’s health. But there are specific changes in women that require the intervention of this specialist. Among them, there are several types of cancer, such as kidney, bladder and other urinary tract.”

It also explains that in the case of urinary tract infections, the urologist is one of the specialists trained to investigate the cause of the problem that occurs frequently in some patients. “A classic example is associated with pregnant women, who can get urinary tract infections frequently, due to changes in a woman’s body during pregnancy. Technically, progesterone, a hormone produced by the cells of the ovaries, ends up decreasing the involuntary contraction of the ureters, which is called peristalsis,” he explained. This change, which is added to the pressure of the uterus, can cause urinary retention, which increases the chances of developing a urinary tract infection.

Vigliolo points out that urinary tract infections aren’t just a risk for pregnant women. “Any woman is more likely to have a urinary tract infection than a man. This is due to the formation of the urinary tract, as the female’s urethra is shorter than the male, making it more susceptible to change.”

In addition, overactive bladder, which is characterized by an increased frequency of urination, affects most urological patients and can lead to secondary problems. Therefore, your case should be investigated as quickly as possible.

“There are cases where it is associated with incontinence, which requires treatment that can be treated or even surgically correct, as it is a problem that can cause depression and affect the social life of patients,” Figliolo explained.

Doctor of Collective Health, highlights that most diseases have a curative treatment, or treatment aimed at minimizing their effects on a woman’s quality of life. “It is important to make clear that many women have urinary problems, that they can lead a normal life, and control their changes. So seeking a specialist, avoiding self-treatment and doing treatment as recommended are essential steps.
