Joinville will use a biological control method developed in Australia to try to reduce dengue cases in the city. The Wolbachia method intentionally infects mosquitoes with bacteria that affect the reproductive system. The proposal will be developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and the World Mosquito Control Program (WMP).

According to the Joinville City Council, this method has a history of positive results in Brazil and 13 other countries. In Australia, for example, it has reduced pollution by 96%. In Indonesia, in four years, cases have decreased by 77%. In Niteroi (RJ), the number of cases has decreased by 69% in two years.

Joinville has been “dating” the Wolbachia method for years. In 2019, The city hall has already strengthened the application to Fiocruz To launch the method in Joinville, on a pilot basis. Now approved, the trial will begin in the city from the end of 2023.

Joinville Mayor Adriano Silva (Novo) expects the city to receive positive results in this way as early as 2025.

  • Laboratory diagnosis
  • Data analysis and epidemiology
