Today the President of the European Commission informed the British Prime Minister of the Community Executive’s support for an agreement between the UK and the European Border and Coastguard Agency (Frontex).

Von der Leyen relayed the message to Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of the Council of Europe leaders’ summit in Reykjavík, where the German politician posted a message on Twitter expressing “the European Commission’s support for a future EU operational agreement”. UK and Frontex”.

During the summit, the British prime minister defended the need to reform the European Court of Human Rights to make it more “transparent”, after the court blocked the deportation of UK asylum-seekers to Rwanda.

“We want to make sure that the European Court acts fairly, efficiently and transparently,” Sunak told reporters in Reykjavík.

The British prime minister is defending an amendment to a rule of the Strasbourg court allowing judges to take urgent precautionary measures that served the European Court of Human Rights to block the first flight with deportees to Rwanda that was due to take off from British soil.

Sunak stressed that the UK has a “long track record” of initiatives to reform the European Court and that it “will continue on this path in the future”.

During the summit, the British Prime Minister met with the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Soffra O’Leary, who praised her role in adjudicating cases of “alleged violations of human rights in Russia.”
