247 – In a vote at the United Nations (UN) Security Council today (25), representatives of the United States and the United Kingdom did not approve a new Russian resolution on the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. The Russians called for a humanitarian ceasefire. There were four votes in favor (Russia, China, the United Arab Emirates and Gabon), two against (the United States and the United Kingdom) and nine votes (including Brazil). There is no minimum number of 15 votes (nine) for a resolution to be passed.

As stated therein CNN, Russia’s representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, said that “ideological considerations and political interests” prevented the adoption of the resolution. He said the US resolution, which was vetoed by Russia and China this Wednesday, was “full of dubious and politicized provisions” and wanted to guarantee the country’s political situation in the region and did not reduce tensions.

The United Nations Security Council also vetoed an American resolution last week that did not approve Brazil’s proposal to speed up the creation of humanitarian corridors in the Middle East. Representatives from more than 50 countries issued statements opposing the North American veto.

Five countries – Russia, China, USA, UK and France – UN. The Security Council has permanent members and veto power. Only one of them is needed to vote against a proposal not being approved.
