At least two people have been killed in the UK in the past few hours by Hurricane Arven with blizzards and strong winds, leaving tens of thousands of people without electricity.

The British Meteorological Agency has issued a red alert for most parts of the country due to strong winds on Friday night, warning that “strong winds” may continue until Saturday.

The country is currently on orange or yellow alert, depending on the region, but weather services advise people to go only when needed.

In Northern Ireland, a man was killed Friday when a tree fell on his vehicle, police said. And another was killed when a tree fell on them in northwestern England.

In Scotland, strong winds disrupted many railroads between Edinburgh, Glasgow and other cities. Many roads have been closed due to the rubble.

The Northern Powergrid Electricity Company estimates that strong winds in the north of the UK, especially in Northumberland County, have lost power to about 55,000 customers.

Meteorological services have asked people to stay off the coast because “strong waves are endangering their lives.”
