The demonstrators, waving Georgian and European flags, gathered outside parliament, where they played the European Union anthem, AFP reported on the spot.
Several pro-European organizations and opposition groups have also appealed to increase pressure on the ruling Georgian Dream party, which is accused of authoritarian drift and deteriorating relations with Brussels.
“We, the Georgian people, demand (Prime Minister), Irakli Garibashvili, to step down and form a new government to implement all the reforms requested by the European Union,” said one of the organizers.
“We are giving the government a week to meet our demands,” he added, explaining that a new demonstration will be held on July 3.
“Whatever promises the Georgian government makes, we no longer believe it will keep its promise,” the march organizers said on Facebook.
They stressed that “the Georgian people must defend their European choice.”
Tbilisi submitted its candidacy for EU membership with Ukraine and Moldova, after Russia launched an attack on its Ukrainian neighbor.
European leaders today decided to grant official candidate status to Kyiv and Chisinau and said they are “ready to grant candidate status” to Tbilisi, once the necessary important reforms are implemented.
