Last Monday, July 3, was the hottest day on record, surpassing for the first time an average high of 17°C, according to the first measurements by North American meteorologist, JN Advanced.
The average daily air temperature at the planet’s surface on July 3 was recorded at 17.01°C by an organization associated with the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
According to the publication, this measurement surpasses the previous daily record (16.92°C), set in August 2016. The global average air temperature, which ranges from about 12°C to just under 17°C on any given day in the year, was an average of 16.2°C at the start of July between 1979 and 2000. The now-detected record has not yet been confirmed by other measurements, but could soon be broken, with the onset of summer in the northern hemisphere.
Normally, the global average temperature continues to rise until late July or early August. Last month, average global temperatures were the highest ever recorded by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Monitoring Unit in early June.
Temperatures are likely to rise more than historical averages over the next year, with the appearance of an El Niño weather phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean.
