Dror Or is one of more than 200 hostages held by Hamas. He has two younger children with him

The Institute of Registries and Notaries (IRN) will reject a request for an urgent evaluation to grant Portuguese citizenship to Dror Or, a Jew of Sephardic origin held hostage by Hamas.

CNN Portuguese confirmed that the request of this 48-year-old citizen will be rejected by the end of the day, as confirmation has not yet arrived from the Ministry of Justice that the man is actually being held by Hamas.

The topic of discussion will be the lack of confirmation that Dror Or is actually in captivity in the Gaza Strip, in the same situation as more than 200 people, at least five of whom have Portuguese citizenship.

An urgent evaluation request to grant Portuguese citizenship to Dror Or was received at the Porto Central Archive on 24 October, but will be rejected. Along with this man there are also two minors, Alma and Noam Or, who are 13 and 16 years old.

Representatives of this man ensure that the Israeli government and the Israeli embassy in Portugal have provided all the necessary documents to prove that Dror Or is indeed being held by Hamas militants, but IRN says it has not received these documents, which should be delivered to him. By the Ministry of Justice, in cooperation with the Ministries of Internal Administration (MAI) and Foreign Affairs (MNE).

CNN Portugal questioned the various ministries involved, and MAI and MNE referred them to the Ministry of Justice, which had not responded as of the publication of this article.

It is noteworthy that many citizens requested to obtain dual citizenship, in order to be included in the negotiations conducted by several countries, led by Egypt, which is trying to remove all its citizens who live in these conditions from the Gaza Strip.

Dror Or’s goal is to achieve what Adina Moshe and Ofer Calderon achieved, who obtained Portuguese citizenship after their kidnapping, and based on urgent requests sent to the government and the President of the Republic.

All these people, according to the Comunidade Israelita do Porto (CIP), have the right to Portuguese citizenship, under the law that grants this same citizenship to the descendants of Sephardic Jews who were expelled from Portugal in the 15th century.

In addition to the kidnapped citizens with ties to Portugal, CIP also reported hostages of the following nationalities: United States (10), Argentina (6), Germany (6), Russia (4), Ukraine (3). Spain (2), United Kingdom (2), France (2), Netherlands (2), Brazil (2), Poland (1), Azerbaijan (1), South Africa (1), Canada (1), Chile (1 ).

These citizens are among more than 200 hostages whose presence has been confirmed by the Israel Defense Forces, and the governments of the United States and Qatar are trying to negotiate the release of the 50 hostages who, like the Portuguese, hold dual citizenship.

CIP states that nine Portuguese were also confirmed dead, and another national who was trying to obtain Portuguese citizenship was killed by Hamas fighters.
