US President Joe Biden will use his State of the Union address to announce a plan by the US military to establish a temporary port on the Gaza coast to increase humanitarian aid.

According to US government sources, the operation – which will be announced during tonight's State of the Union address in Washington (dawn Friday in Portugal) – will not require US forces on the ground to build the pier. To allow more food, medicine and other essential items to reach the Gaza Strip.

This measure seeks to increase the momentum of humanitarian aid that was put on the ground, when the United States was forced to bypass Israel, its main ally in the Middle East, and find ways to help civilians who were victims of Israeli bombing.

Biden first referred to this idea last week when he mentioned the possibility of establishing a sea corridor, explaining that the United States was working with its allies on how to provide assistance to Gaza.

Gen. Eric Kurella, head of US Central Command, told the Senate that he informed the White House of this naval option.

Today, the United States carried out a third airdrop of humanitarian aid in the northern part of the Gaza Strip, where there is no Israeli presence.

After five months of clashes between Israel and the Islamist Hamas movement, the conflict has destroyed much of the Gaza Strip and exacerbated the humanitarian catastrophe.

Many Palestinians, especially in the north, struggle to obtain food to survive.

Aid groups said it had become almost impossible to deliver supplies to most parts of Gaza due to difficulty coordinating with the Israeli army.
