Today, the Spanish Ministry of Public Affairs requested the closure of the investigation related to the wife of the country's Prime Minister, considering that the complaint that led to this is unfounded.

The announcement of the opening of this “preliminary investigation”, on Wednesday, by a court in Madrid, prompted the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, to say that he is considering leaving his position, promising to issue a public statement about his future next Monday. -justice.

The judicial investigation into Pedro Sánchez's wife, Begonia Gomez, came as a result of a complaint about alleged influence peddling filed by the Mos Limpas association, linked to the Spanish far right.

The association said today that the complaint it filed earlier this month is based on digital media content and comments on television programs.

The association acknowledged that these allegations may be false, and said that the responsibility lies with the media outlets that published them, and that in all cases a judicial investigation must be used to determine their veracity.

Today, the Public Prosecution decided to close the case and asked the investigating judge to do so, according to sources reported by several Spanish media outlets.

Prosecutors said there was no evidence of a crime that would justify opening criminal proceedings, according to the EFE news agency, which quoted sources familiar with the case.

The case concerns Begonia Gomez's alleged ties to private companies, such as the airline Air Europa, which received public support during the pandemic crisis or signed contracts with the state when Sánchez was already prime minister.

The Socialist Prime Minister, who has been in office since 2018, said he needed to “stop and think” to answer the question of whether it was worth continuing to head the government “despite the quagmire in which the right and extreme right seek to change policy.”

Victims of the “Slime Machine”

Sánchez said that his and his wife had been victims of the “sludge machine” of the People's Party and Vox for months and accused the two parties of an “operation of harassment and personal destruction” because they did not accept the results of the recent elections and realized that “a political attack will not be enough.”

Both PP and Vox accused him of harming himself and staging a “spectacle” that would embarrass Spain internationally to divert attention from various suspicions of corruption, instead of providing explanations.

In addition to these suspicions regarding women, Sánchez was attacked over a judicial investigation into an advisor to a former Socialist minister who allegedly charged illegal kickbacks for the sale of masks during the pandemic to public entities, including regional governments that were then in government hands. Pso.

This issue led to the establishment of investigative committees in Parliament, with the support of the Socialists, into public administrations' procurement of sanitary materials during the Covid-19 crisis. The work of these committees began this week.

Since admitting he could resign, Sánchez has gained the support of the parliamentary parties that made the current government viable last November, and which asked him not to resign.

There is also a mobilization of the leaders and structures of the Socialist Workers' Party, with public demonstrations in support of the Prime Minister and calls for demonstrations on Saturday.
