Google Maps will no longer display the timeline on the web version of the platform. The notice was sent to users via email on Wednesday (5). The message says everyone has until December 1 to save trips on their mobile phones before the data is deleted. The change focuses on improving privacy, because instead of linking information to a Google account, it will only be stored on the user’s device through the Google Maps app, available for Android and iPhone (iOS). Below, check out more details about the change.

The timeline feature is also known as location history. The function tracks routes and trips based on the location of a cell phone or mobile device. This way, it is possible to check all the places the user has visited. The initiative to change the storage rule will only allow access to existing paths in the application. According to the company, this change comes as part of efforts to increase user privacy.

To continue accessing your location history on your cell phone, you must activate the new timeline settings in the app. By doing this, the last 90 days of travel history will be transferred to the first mobile device on which the user signed in to Google. The company will delete the data before this period.

To turn on location history and use the Timeline feature, in the Google Maps app, tap your profile picture in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then select “Your Schedule.” Then tap on the three dots and go to Settings & Privacy and activate the Location History feature. Once this is done, the information will be stored on your device.
