In Ceará, notifications of arbovirus cases – such as dengue, chikungunyua and zika – recorded growth comparing the first five epidemic weeks of this year with the same period in 2021. The jump rose from 738 to 1,869 cases, which is an increase From 153 2%.

The municipality of Barbala, in Kariri district, is the most frequent of notifications in the time period (579 per 100,000 inhabitants) and was the first to order an ultra-low volume (UBV) method – known as fogging – to control the disease Aedes aegypti. The operation in the city includes three spray sessions, all still in February, covering 600 blocks and featuring six servers in three cars.

Spraying is carried out based on emergency requests from municipalities, after carrying out an epidemiological analysis. Sesa has teams to meet new orders for this year’s Dukhan in all health zones.

It is important to note that UBV is one mosquito control strategy, but not the only one. The population plays an important role in the fight against Aedes aegypti. Containers or open spaces where water can accumulate can become a breeding ground for an insect. Therefore, care and maintenance of tanks should be constant, carried out at least once a week.

“This increase raises a very important warning, especially in this rainy period when certain reservoirs or containers are available or discovered, making it a favorable environment for the Aedes aegypti herb. It is time to double the care even more, to protect yourself, whenever possible with insect repellents, But, mainly, to check if there is sediment in your house that is not covered, because it can become a breeding site for mosquitoes,” directs the company’s Executive Secretary for Health Control and Regulation, Ricristhi Gonçalves.

The increase in notifications was driven by suspected cases of dengue, which grew from 667 to 1,470, and chikungunya, with a jump from 66 to 392 cases. Zika notifications decreased from 15 to 7.
