Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Poland and Switzerland have just experienced their warmest September on record, with exceptionally high temperatures expected to continue into October. Portugal, where higher temperatures in September are already common compared to these countries, may not have reached a record level, but the hot weather will continue here too in the first days of the tenth month of the year.

as WatchmanThe French meteorological authority, Meteo France, said that the average temperature for September reached 21.5 degrees Celsius, which is between 3.5 degrees Celsius and 3.6 degrees Celsius above the normal rate for the period 1991-2020. September 2023 was the hottest for Gaul.

But this phenomenon did not occur only in France. Record numbers were also reached in Germany and Belgium, where temperatures remained 4 degrees above average. In Belgium, September was hotter than July and August, “which has not happened since 1961,” explained David Dehenau, of the Royal Belgian Meteorological Institute.

Poland, Austria and Switzerland are the same.

In southern Spain, the highest September temperature ever recorded in Europe must have been recorded: 45.7 degrees, on September 5, in Montoro, near Cordoba.

For Portugal, it is not known whether September is the hottest on record, but there is no doubt that the last few days have been hotter than usual. Vitor Prior, director of the IPMA Meteorological Observatory in Funchal, stated on Sunday on SIC-Notícias that “these situations have already occurred in the past” in October, but that nevertheless temperatures are “much higher than normal”, as “normal values” are This elevation is about 23 or 24 degrees.

How long will we remain under this heat wave? The specialist expects about eight or nine more days.

Many scientists have warned of human-induced climate change, which is causing global temperatures to rise. For example, this year the Northern Hemisphere recorded its hottest summer on record, and it is becoming increasingly common for hot temperatures to persist throughout the year, between March and November.
