Miklós Halmai was listened to for approximately 20 minutes

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Mauro Vieira, summoned the Hungarian ambassador, Miklós Halmay, to explain Jair Bolsonaro’s stay at the Hungarian embassy in Brasilia.

According to the CNN BrazilThe ambassador said that he hosted Bolsonaro, during the carnival, to discuss common interests between Hungary and Brazil. Sources from the Brazilian ministry say that Miklos Halmay limited himself to repeating the version of events previously presented by Bolsonaro's lawyers, who stated, through a memorandum, that the former president went to the Hungarian embassy to strengthen relations and “maintain contacts with the authorities.” From a friendly country.

These clarifications were welcomed by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which reiterated that talks and relations between the two countries must take place with members of the current government.

Halmay spent 20 minutes at Itamaraty Palace, the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. So far this is the only reaction from the Brazilian government.

The decision comes in the wake of news reported by the American newspaper The New York Times, which reported that Jair Bolsonaro spent two days in the Hungarian embassy, in what may appear to be an asylum request from the former Brazilian president for the purpose of escaping Brazilian justice.

Surveillance camera images show that the former Brazilian president arrived at the embassy on the night of February 12 and left the compound on the afternoon of February 14.

According to the New York Times, Bolsonaro tried to take advantage of his friendship with Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian prime minister, in an attempt to escape Brazilian justice through a potential asylum claim in Hungary.
