Competition World Nature Photography Awards fair Showcasing the world's species and landscapes, this year, cameras shine a spotlight on the predators and prey of the animal kingdom. Some captured birds with bloody beaks, others a lynx sitting on the ice next to the carcass of another animal or a fox amid the wreckage. The winning photo of 2024 was taken by chance.
Photographer Tracy Lund was on vacation in the Shetland Islands, Scotland, when she saw thousands of gannets diving into the water in search of fish. He brought a waterproof camera and seized the moment: “[Foi] An incredible sight to watch, let alone photograph. “I took 1,800 photos that day, but only had two to use.” location From the competition.
Two gannets underwater (Two Underwater Gannets, free translation), shows two of these birds competing for the same fish in the water: the tail of one and the head of the other. The scene was enough to be the nature photo of the year and guarantee the British woman a cash prize of 929 euros.

In the photo gallery, there's a red-billed oxpecker resting on the nose of a buffalo, or a school of fish being chased by a humpback whale in the Norwegian fjords, or a sea lion playing with a plastic bag, or “The Last Seconds.” A zebra is about to be hunted by a cheetah.
“That morning, we decided to follow four cheetahs on a hunt. We followed them for hours. We knew something was going to happen. The cheetahs chased a small group of zebras. In those seconds, I captured this photo of a mother zebra trying one last time to fend off her cub from The cheetah that was about to attack her failed. “I will remember these last seconds for the rest of my life,” recalls Belgian photographer Alex Prax.
In Porto Santo, Madeira, Hungarian Ferenc Lorencz photographed a fish and what remained of a sunken ship.
