Demand for European Moves Climbs as Search Data Reveals Changing Priorities
Spain remains the most popular destination for Britons considering a move abroad, with new research showing a sharp rise in online interest as lifestyle and climate continue to drive relocation decisions.
A study by Bird & Co Solicitors, which replicates its 2023 analysis, examined Google search data across 44 European countries using terms such as “moving to Spain from UK”. The findings highlight shifting patterns in demand, with several countries experiencing significant growth in search volumes since the previous report.
Spain retained its top position in 2026, recording an average of 2,000 monthly searches—an increase of 25% from 1,600 searches in 2023. The sustained demand underscores the country’s enduring appeal among UK residents seeking warmer climates and lifestyle changes.
Portugal ranked second, with a notable 38% increase in searches, rising from 800 in 2023 to 1,100 in 2026. The growth consolidates its position as a key alternative destination for Britons exploring relocation options.
France held steady in third place, with searches climbing by 29% to 900 per month. Its continued popularity reflects a combination of accessibility, cultural familiarity, and proximity to the UK.
Switzerland and Italy See Strong Gains as Preferences Broaden
Among the most significant movers in the rankings is Switzerland, which rose from fifth to fourth place. Monthly searches surged by 78%, increasing from 450 to 800, suggesting growing interest in destinations associated with economic stability and high living standards.
Italy also recorded a substantial increase, moving from seventh to joint fifth place alongside Ireland. Searches for Italy rose by 71%, from 350 to 600 per month, indicating renewed interest in its lifestyle offering and property market.
In contrast, Ireland experienced a decline in relative demand. Previously tied for second place in 2023, it fell to joint fifth in 2026, with searches dropping by 25% from 800 to 600. While still a popular option, the data suggests other destinations are gaining traction more rapidly.
Norway maintained its sixth-place ranking, with searches increasing by 25% to 500 per month. Meanwhile, Poland emerged as a new entrant in the top rankings, also recording 500 monthly searches, pointing to a growing interest in Eastern European destinations.
Malta joined the list in joint seventh place alongside Greece and Germany, each attracting around 400 monthly searches. These additions further illustrate the diversification of preferred destinations among UK movers.
Climate and Lifestyle Continue to Drive Decisions
The data points to a clear preference for warmer regions, with Southern European countries dominating the rankings. Six of the top destinations for 2026 are located in this region, reinforcing the importance of climate in relocation decisions.
At the same time, increased interest in non-European Union countries such as Switzerland and Norway suggests a shift in post-Brexit attitudes, with some Britons exploring alternatives beyond EU member states.
Daniel Chard, Partner and Head of Property at Bird & Co Solicitors, said: “The latest research shows that Spain and Portugal are generating the highest levels of interest from UK residents exploring a move abroad. That increase in online searches reflects a clear curiosity about life overseas, particularly in destinations known for climate, lifestyle and relative value in the property market.
“The dream of better weather or a different pace of life is exciting, but the practical side still matters. Selling a property here is a legal process that runs on paperwork, deadlines and coordination between several parties. Getting your documents together early, speaking to a conveyancer sooner rather than later and building in a bit of breathing space on timings can really help keep things steady. When that groundwork is done properly, the move abroad tends to feel far more manageable.”
Practical Considerations Remain Key for Prospective Movers
While the appeal of relocating abroad continues to grow, the findings also highlight the importance of preparation and legal planning when selling property in the UK.
Bird & Co Solicitors said its property and conveyancing specialists are seeing increased enquiries from homeowners looking to facilitate overseas moves, particularly as interest in Southern Europe accelerates.
The latest data suggests that, despite economic uncertainties and regulatory changes in recent years, the desire among Britons to relocate abroad remains strong—driven by lifestyle aspirations, climate considerations, and evolving perceptions of value across European housing markets.
