Do you know what a red line on the road means?

They already exist in the neighboring country and anyone driving on Spanish roads will notice them: however, they are used to reduce the numbers of road accidents. The Spanish government has launched several innovative measures to ensure greater road safety – see the case of the A-355, located in Andalusia, one of the roughest roads in Spain, even known as the “Road of Fear”, responsible for the deaths of 10 people in 2023.

In this sense, the Municipality of Andalusia, in coordination with the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) in Spain, has intervened to introduce a new way of indicating danger.

The Andalusian government delegate in Malaga, Patricia Navarro, highlighted the action taken by the Andalusian government on this section of the A-355 “where we have been taking measures for years, always within the scope of our competence on this route” but the late response of the General Traffic Department to the installation of speed cameras , as a deterrent measure against coercive measures… outside the box.

They explained: “We did not stand idly by and resorted to deterrent measures that we could establish within the scope of our jurisdictions, such as this continuous red line.”

A fixed red line was drawn – the first in all of Andalusia – highlighting the prohibition of overtaking. It serves the same purpose as a continuous double line, but the bolder color may prevent drivers from attempting to overtake when prohibited. The color red is also believed to highlight the increased danger of certain locations on this route. This procedure will be followed by the placement of four educational radars or digital signs, showing the speed reached by the vehicles in circulation and reminding, through traffic lights, of the maximum permissible speed.

The road was opened in 2014 with an expected rate of 7,000 vehicles per day, and has now reached nearly 20,000 vehicles per day, which includes a large number of heavy goods vehicles.
