UPrisoners protested for about 12 hours on the roof of one of the UK’s largest high-security prisons.

The alert was issued at 4:30pm local time in Manchester, the same time as in Lisbon. According to the BBC, The protest came to an end at 4.15 am on Thursday.

According to officers called to the scene, the man “voluntarily came down from the roof” and re-entered the jail.

During the 12-hour journey, officers and inmates reached a compromise, and people were asked to stay away while experts tried to negotiate with the inmate.

A prison spokesman told the BBC that an investigation had been launched into what happened. “The incident has been resolved and the inmates’ action will have consequences as disturbances in prisons are not tolerated.”

The prison has a capacity of 1,200 inmates and was rebuilt after riots in the 90s. The establishment, known as Strangeways, was the scene of a 25-day inmate strike. It was the largest prisoner revolt in the country’s history. From the 1st to the 25th of last April, the last prisoners were removed from the roof and a protest was held.

This is not the first time in the past decade that an inmate has mounted a protest on the roof. In 2015, an inmate climbed onto the roof to protest conditions at the facility.
