The Portuguese João Canejo won the award for best director at the Uruguayan International Film Festival this Saturday, announced the Cinematica Uruguayan, in Montevideo, which organized the event, for Lusa.

“The obsessive composition of the shots and the development of an equally refined sound concept are the hallmarks of a director who has a cinematic idea and a way of realizing it visualized by photography,” the jury emphasized in appreciating the film “Money for a Living.”

“Formal Force is at the service of exploring a woman’s psyche in a radical crisis that affects all of her essential connections. The dramatic mechanics convey the characters’ experience almost directly to the viewer, an effect that is exhausting but aesthetically impressive,” he added.

The film “Mal Viver” had already won the Silver Bear at the end of February for the Jury Prize at the 73rd Berlin Film Festival.

The film is, according to the synopsis, “the story of a family made up of several women of different generations, living a life riven by resentment and rancor, which is shaken by the unexpected arrival of a granddaughter, at weekend time”.

The cast includes actresses Rita Blanco, Anabella Moreira, Madalena Almeida, Clea Almeida, Vera Barreto, Felipe Arrioza, Leonor Silvera, Lea Carvalho, Beatriz Batarda, Leonor Vasconcelos, and Carolina Amaral, joined by actors Nuno Lopez and Rafael Morris.

The film premieres in Portuguese theaters on May 11th.
