In terms of new daily cases per million inhabitants, Portugal fell from an average of 1,100 in the previous seven days to 1,060 and moved from 16th to 15th in the European Union.

The European average of new daily cases per million inhabitants fell from 1,350 to 1,110 and the global average from 224 to 184.

In the rest of the world, taking into account countries with populations over 1 million, South Korea maintains the highest average of new cases (6,740), followed by Cyprus, Austria, New Zealand (3150) and Iceland (2,940).

The disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which was discovered in late 2019 in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.
