Increasing salaries and improving working conditions are among the demands that unions have already demanded from the previous ministerial team, which will bring them back to the negotiating table.

Doctors call for the measures to be implemented within two months

Improving the ability to attract and retain doctors in public service, particularly with a new medical profession, and evaluating the local health unit model were among the priorities presented by the Medical Association to the new Minister of Health.

At the first meeting with Ana Paula Martins, the Medical Association (OM) handed over a document listing six priority measures for 60 days, including the creation of a new medical profession, to be applied to all doctors from training onwards.

Leaving the meeting, the head of the doctors' union, Carlos Cortes, told reporters that the main aim of the proposals was to “improve the ability to attract and retain the National Health Service”.

“We will send a set of documents in the coming weeks on the issues mentioned here,” the president said, revealing that the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, had asked the Operations Office to submit a proposal for the new medical system within a month. Professionalism, “that is, in the training, research and working conditions of doctors in the National Health Service”.

Another point that Carlos Cortés considered a priority was the “rigorous evaluation” of the Local Health Units (ULS) model, explaining that the Operations Department already has a committee that is preparing a report that includes this evaluation and is expected to submit it at the end of May. .

“We informed the Minister of Health of the formation of a committee established by the Medical Syndicate in January this year to monitor the ULS, which already has a preliminary report and will submit it during May to the Ministry of Health and the Executive Board of the SNS,” he said.

In addition to these two measures, Carlos Cortes also said that the COO had taken up a “package of measures” — which he did not want to specify — to improve emergency response.

Nurses provide 16 measures

The Nurses' Union (OE) also submitted 16 proposals to the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, for inclusion in the government's emergency plan for the sector, expressing its concern about the shortage of 14,000 nurses.

He said, “We left 16 proposals to the minister [da Saúde] The emergency plan to be developed. Most of these measures are based on the issue of access to and improvement of care. “Today’s nurses have a set of skills that can be put at the service of the country, which is why we left behind these proposals,” said Luis Felipe Parreira, president of the Nursing Organization.

Speaking to reporters after leaving a meeting at the Ministry of Health, Luis Felipe Parreira revealed that Ana Paula Martins had guaranteed that the issue of career development would be “in relation to the stimulus plan and the emergency plan that she will develop and which she will present soon.”

According to Luis Felipe Barrera, the governor will meet with unions to discuss nurses' jobs and salary conditions.
