A UK-based humanitarian organisation, Muntada Aid, remains one of the few aid groups still operating inside war-torn Sudan, delivering daily food assistance and emergency shelter as the country’s civil conflict deepens into its third year.

Since fighting erupted in April 2023, Sudan has descended into one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, marked by mass displacement, collapsing infrastructure, and restricted access to essential services. With large parts of the country cut off from international aid, organisations maintaining a presence on the ground have become critical lifelines for millions of civilians.

Delivering Aid at Scale Despite Growing Risks

Operating under increasingly hazardous conditions, Muntada Aid has continued to provide frontline support across Khartoum. The charity currently runs emergency kitchens that feed more than 4,000 people each day, alongside distributing monthly food supplies to thousands of vulnerable households.

In response to widespread displacement, the organisation has also begun constructing temporary accommodation for over 1,000 families who have lost their homes due to the conflict.

These efforts come as humanitarian access across Sudan becomes progressively constrained. Ongoing violence, including airstrikes and instability in urban and rural areas alike, has severely disrupted supply routes and limited the ability of aid agencies to operate safely.

Collapse of Basic Services Intensifies Crisis

The conflict has devastated Sudan’s infrastructure, leaving millions without reliable access to food, clean water, or medical care. Hospitals have been damaged or overwhelmed, while entire communities remain isolated from essential services.

As a result, a significant gap in humanitarian provision has emerged, particularly in high-risk areas such as Khartoum. For many families, the small number of organisations still able to operate within the country represent their only access to basic necessities.

The scale of need has intensified pressure on those groups that remain active, with demand for food, shelter, and medical support continuing to outpace available resources.

First-Hand Accounts Highlight Severity of Conditions

According to Muntada Aid, conditions on the ground are deteriorating rapidly, with displaced communities facing extreme hardship and limited options for survival.

Kabir Miah, Project Manager at Muntada Aid, commented, “What we’re seeing on the ground is beyond what most people realise. Entire communities have been uprooted, and families are surviving with almost nothing. For many people, the meals we provide are the only food they will have that day. The need is overwhelming, but access is becoming harder and more dangerous. Despite this, we are committed to staying and supporting those who have been left behind.”

His remarks underscore the challenges faced by humanitarian workers, as well as the critical importance of maintaining a presence in areas where aid access is severely restricted.

Limited Global Attention Raises Concerns

Despite the scale of the crisis, Sudan has received comparatively limited international attention, with global focus often directed towards other geopolitical conflicts. Aid organisations warn that this lack of visibility risks exacerbating the situation, as funding and resources remain insufficient to meet escalating needs.

Muntada Aid’s continued operations provide rare, direct insight into conditions within the country, highlighting both the severity of the crisis and the urgent need for sustained international engagement.

Call for Increased Awareness and Support

As the humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate, Muntada Aid is calling for greater global awareness and increased support for relief efforts. The charity emphasises that without additional resources and attention, millions of vulnerable people risk being left without access to even the most basic forms of assistance.

With conflict ongoing and access constraints unlikely to ease in the near term, the role of organisations able to operate inside Sudan remains vital. For thousands of families, the aid delivered each day represents not only immediate relief but also a critical lifeline in an increasingly uncertain environment.
