According to local media, the confusion began after the final whistle. Dissatisfied with the 2-3 defeat, fans of Arima, the host team of Portuguese Abel Camara – who scored both goals – and Sergio Silva, stormed the field to please the team. The police started firing tear gas, which was banned by FIFA, and the panic of the fans, as well as the confusion, caused many to fall and they ended up being run over by the fans who tried to leave the stadium at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang.
According to CNN Indonesia, 127 people died – 34 died in the stadium, the rest are already in hospital – and the unrest spread to the immediate vicinity of the stadium, where there were clashes between fans and police. There are still a record 180 wounded.
