Migrants’ remittances in 2021 account for 1.7% of Portuguese GDP – Economy

The total value of migrant remittances in 2021 amounted to 3,677.76 million euros, which is the highest in the past two decades and represents 1.7% of Portuguese GDP, according to the migration report.

Citing data from the Bank of Portugal, the report by the Observatório da Emigração, a think tank at Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, indicates an increase of 1.8% in the value of remittances, compared to 2020.

Switzerland and France continue to rank among the countries with the highest value of remittances, with “more than half of incoming remittances” coming from these two countries: €1,051.26 million and €1,023.45 million, respectively.

The document identifies the countries with the highest volume of remittances to Portugal, such as the United Kingdom (429.38 million euros), Angola (251.82 million euros), the United States of America (250.54 million euros), Germany (223.44 million), Spain (124.44 million), Luxembourg (71.85 million). million), Belgium (58.05 million) and the Netherlands (44.56 million).

In 2021, there was an increase of €64.9m in the value of inward transfers, which represents an increase of 1.8% compared to 2020.

Compared to 2020, and based on the analysis of the ten countries with the highest volume of remittances in 2021, the report mentions a positive variation in six countries: the United Kingdom (13.19%), Spain (11.33%), Angola (2.56%) and the United States (2.37%). and Switzerland (1.37%) and the Netherlands (0.20%).

There was negative variation in the remaining four countries of the top ten sources of remittances: Luxembourg (minus 8.35%), Belgium (minus 1.44%), France (minus 1.27%) and Germany (minus 1.08%).

The 2021 Migration Report will be presented today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lisbon.
