LONDON, British alt-rock outfit Micko & The Mellotronics have announced the release of their latest single “Misery Guts”, set to drop on 25th October, the same day the band takes to the stage at The Fiddlers Elbow in Camden. The single marks the second release from their forthcoming album The Trinity, due in early 2026.

Following their summer release “Would You Believe It”, the band’s newest track continues their distinctive fusion of post-punk energy and sharp lyrical insight. Described by frontman Micko Westmoreland as a “self-apparent cartoon noir,” “Misery Guts” pairs a driving rhythm section with layered, part-orchestrated, part-abstracted guitar work from Paul Cuddeford, known for his collaborations with The Boomtown Rats and Holy Holy.

At its heart, the song explores the fraught dynamics of a couple locked in a cycle of confrontation and mutual criticism. “They have dedicated their earthly energy to complaint, projected externally and onto each other, terrified to look in their own backyard and ultimately own up to the behaviour,” Westmoreland said, reflecting on the track’s core theme. “The mirror is a painful place for many. But it’s more than we can bear to face up to it all, states a lyric from the song.”

Inspiration and Creative Process

The conceptual roots of “Misery Guts” trace back to Westmoreland’s long-standing fascination with human behaviour and emotional conflict. The singer-songwriter revealed that the song was partly inspired by remarks made by Tom Baker, the iconic Doctor Who actor, in his autobiography. Baker’s reflections on couples who “perfect exquisite torture upon each other over time” struck a chord with Westmoreland, eventually shaping the tone and narrative of the single.

The result is a song that captures both the dark humour and emotional exhaustion of modern relationships, set to the band’s signature blend of angular guitars and tight percussion. The track’s lyrical perspective underscores Westmoreland’s enduring interest in the psychology of interpersonal dynamics — an interest that continues to inform much of his work with The Mellotronics.

A Glimpse into The Trinity

“Misery Guts” is the second single to be lifted from The Trinity, the band’s upcoming studio album. The record delves into themes of mid-life reflection, personal accountability, and social observation, echoing Westmoreland’s distinctive songwriting approach that balances wit, realism, and melodic precision.

According to the band, The Trinity will also explore broader societal issues with a “small p” political lens, blending character-driven storytelling with the group’s signature sound. Rolling Stones producer Chris Kimsey, who serves as executive producer on the project, has been a guiding force behind the record’s sonic development.

Kimsey’s involvement brought an experienced ear to the creative process, offering input on instrumentation, harmonies, and production nuances. His collaboration with the band has, according to Westmoreland, been “invaluable” in refining their sound and maintaining a cohesive artistic direction throughout the recording process.

The Band’s Ongoing Evolution

Formed in 2017, Micko & The Mellotronics emerged as a live extension of Westmoreland’s songwriting, transforming his sharp lyricism and angular guitar style into a full-band experience. The lineup — featuring Jan Noble on drums, Budge Magraw on bass, and occasional appearances by guitarist Paul Cuddeford — has since become a fixture in London’s independent music circuit.

The group released their debut album 1/2 Dove 1/2 Pigeon in 2020, earning acclaim for its combination of post-punk urgency and inventive storytelling. Since then, they have developed a reputation for energetic live performances, with multiple appearances at the 100 Club on Oxford Street and a series of support slots alongside acts including Evan Dando (The Lemonheads), The Woodentops, David Devant & His Spirit Wife, and The Monochrome Set.

The band’s sound has often drawn comparisons to British new wave and post-punk pioneers such as The Jam, Wire, XTC, and Pulp, though critics note that their style retains a distinctive modern edge akin to Idles and Shame.

Upcoming Release and Live Date

The release of “Misery Guts” coincides with the band’s Camden performance on 25th October, offering fans the first opportunity to hear the track live. The single will be available across all major streaming platforms and serves as a preview of what’s to come from The Trinity.

The band’s London show at The Fiddlers Elbow promises a high-energy set featuring both new material and highlights from their earlier releases — a fitting celebration for the debut of their latest work.

“Misery Guts” is out 25th October 2025 on all streaming platforms.
