“Medical Alchemist” by Franz Christoph Janck

During the Middle Ages, many doctors would taste the urine of patients to diagnose medical conditions such as diabetes.

The Urology Endoscopy – The medical practice of visual examination of a patient’s urine – has been used since ancient Rome and Greece. However, during the medieval era it had an increasing importance. Doctors at the time did not notice the differences in the color and on consistency, but also in flavor.

At the time, direct examination of the patient by undressing him was considered socially unacceptable. Therefore, diagnosing potential medical conditions by urine has been a good alternative used by clinicians.

The important tool used was the so-called urine wheel. This was used to diagnose diseases based on the color, smell, and taste of a patient’s urine in the early 16th century, as explained by Scientific American.

The urine wheel is a diagram that relates the color of urine to a specific disease. Usually the picture consists of 20 different colored urine bottles lined up around a circle – Almost like a food wheel. Each vial contains a line that links it to a specific disease summary.

The English physician Thomas Willis noticed in the seventeenth century that the urine of a diabetic patient had a disease “Sweet sweet, As if it were impregnated with honey or sugar.

It was Willis who coined the term “fat” (meaning “sweetened with honey”) in diabetes mellitus. In fact, this medical condition used to be known as Willis disease.

For more than 3,500 years, doctors have been in Ancient Egypt and India They were able to diagnose diabetes in their patients from the excess sugar present in their urine. The site wrote that diabetes was even one of the first diseases described in historical documents amusing planet.

Another well-known case is the case of Paul King George III, from England, which would be purple. This strange color may be a sign that he suffered from it porphyria, A group of liver diseases that negatively affected the nervous system.

In the late 19th century, chemical analysis began to be used in urinalysis. In this way, the use of the endoscope and urine wheel was stopped.
