Saúde de Maceió has an extensive network of psychosocial care throughout the city. The service, which is delivered in health units and psychosocial care centers (CAPs), provides care targeting the most diverse mental health requirements in the city and works with a focus on rebuilding the psycho-emotional skills of users of the unified health system.

In health units, psychiatrists and psychologists care for mild or moderate mental disorders that need constant monitoring, while respecting each person’s privacy. In these cases, the user may obtain psychotherapeutic help, participate in group sessions and social spaces, or use medications to help restore mental health.

In psychosocial care centers (CAPS), care targets the most serious and persistent cases and has a variety of specialists to restore the individual’s health and independence.

“At Caps, assistance is only aimed at users experiencing serious psychological distress. In this description, we include people with needs resulting from the abuse of alcohol, crack and other substances, who are living in crisis situations or undergoing psychosocial rehabilitation processes,” explained Rosanne Farias, coordinator Technical coordination of the psychosocial care network in the municipality.

In addition to psychologists, Caps teams also include occupational therapists, nurses, psychiatrists, paediatricians, physical education specialists, social workers and workshop trainers who work on each case in an individual, multidisciplinary and integrated way.

Access to services

Users who wish to receive psychiatric services in the metropolitan health units need to undergo a prior consultation with a general practitioner, who, according to the needs of each case, will refer the patient to schedule an appointment through the municipal regulatory system.

As for assistance with network psychologists, it is not necessary to provide a referral, the service is carried out on automatic request. In this way, it is enough for the user to report his need and request a later appointment.

In the five hats of the municipality, the service is characterized as “open door”, meaning that when searching for these units, users are welcomed by the team, and according to the need presented, the service is provided. Depending on the severity of the condition, the centers can also direct the user to receive care at another healthcare point in the municipality or in the city’s hospital network.
